Júnía Líf Maríuerla Sigurjónsdóttir - Psychology student, 33 years old

The proposal was put forward by the nominating committee of the Reykjavík Socialist Association and approved at a general meeting last Saturday, February 7th. The list reflects the broad spectrum of strong, idealistic individuals of all ages within the Socialist Party. The Socialist Party is a party for the public, and therefore consists of ordinary people who are passionate about social justice.

We are experiencing a multi-year cost of living crisis where all necessities are becoming more expensive without our wages keeping pace, making it increasingly difficult to make ends meet. Likewise, the city's services have been declining with increased outsourcing of infrastructure. Socialists want to address this problem and reverse this trend. It IS necessary and it IS possible.

We need a major initiative to solve the housing crisis that prevails here. We intend to establish the Reykjavík Housing Association, which will build direct, affordable, quality, non-profit housing. Let's build for people, not investors. We have built for the public before; let's do it again.

We are fed up with the absurdity in the city's transportation matters. The infrastructure debt increases year by year, predatory companies with their endless apps charge residents for using city parking, and the plan is now to privatize public transport to profit from public transportation. Let's reverse the trend and regain control of the city's infrastructure.

If we are to improve the school system, it's time for real action. Let's listen to the people on the ground. Let's bring more professional support into preschools and primary schools so that all children can thrive and find their footing. Let's tackle the preschool problem head-on and solve staff turnover with improved working conditions. We want to ensure a constructive and inspiring school environment where both children and staff flourish. We must prioritize our children and ensure that schools contribute to their well-being.

We also need to manage public funds responsibly and roll back the outsourcing that has steadily increased in all sectors in Reykjavík. Outsourcing always results in poorer quality and service in the long run, and worse conditions for staff, while ultimately costing city residents more. Why can't the person who cleans the city's institutions be on the city's payroll? Why are only some bus drivers employed by the city, while the majority do the same work for private companies for lower wages? We want a strong Reykjavík where capital works for the people.

We need to collect funds from those who have them. We must push with all our might for capital income to be taxed equally with earned income and returned to municipalities as local income tax. Basic services need to be funded, and a fairer society created.

It is clear that we have many tasks ahead, and we intend to reverse the course that has been taken here in recent years. We aim to solve the cost of living crisis, build a strong Reykjavík, and create a city that works for everyone.

X-J a strong city for the public
