The proposal was put forward by the nomination committee of Sósíalistafélag Reykjavíkur and approved at a society meeting last Saturday, February 7th. The list reflects the great breadth of strong idealists of all ages that Sósíalistaflokkurinn possesses. Sósíalistaflokkurinn is a party for the public and therefore consists of ordinary people who are passionate about social justice.
We are experiencing a multi-year cost of living crisis where all necessities become more expensive without our wages keeping up with that development, and it is increasingly difficult to make ends meet. Likewise, the city's services have been declining with increased outsourcing of infrastructure. Socialists want to address this problem and reverse this trend. It IS necessary and it IS possible.
We need a major effort to solve the housing crisis that prevails here. We intend to establish Byggingafélag Reykjavíkur, which will build direct, affordable, good, and non-profit housing. Let's build for people, not investors. We have built for the public before, let's do it again.
We are fed up with the nonsense in the city's transport affairs. The infrastructure debt increases year by year, predatory companies with their endless apps charge city residents for using the city's parking spaces, and the plan is now to privatize public transport to profit from public transportation. Let's reverse the situation and regain control of the city's infrastructure.
If we are to improve the school system, it is time for real action. Let's listen to the people on the ground. Let's get more professional support into preschools and primary schools so that all children can thrive and find their footing. Let's tackle the preschool problem firmly and solve staff turnover with improved working conditions. We want to ensure a constructive and stimulating school environment where both children and staff flourish. We must prioritize our children and ensure that schools contribute to their well-being.
We also need to manage public funds well and unwind the outsourcing that has steadily increased in all areas in Reykjavík. Outsourcing always results in poorer quality and service in the long run and worse conditions for staff, but ultimately costs city residents more. Why can't the person who cleans the city's institutions be on the city's payroll? Why is only a portion of bus drivers working for the city while the majority do the same work for private companies for lower wages? We want a strong Reykjavík where capital works for the people.
We need to seek funding from those who have it. There must be full pressure to tax capital income equally with earned income and for it to be returned to municipalities as local income tax. Basic services need to be funded, and a fairer society created.
It is clear that we have many tasks ahead, and we intend to reverse the course that has been taken here in recent years. We aim to solve the cost of living crisis, build a strong Reykjavík, and create a city that works for everyone.
X-J a strong city for the public
