Resolution of the Party's Boards - Not Another Iraq War

Not Another Iraq WarThe Socialist Party of Iceland (Sósíalistaflokkur Íslands) utterly condemns the completely illegal, immoral, and dangerous bombing attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran and demands that the Icelandic government advocate for peace in this conflict rather than pouring more oil on the fire of war.The situation in the Middle East is alarming.Representatives of the Iranian government were literally at the negotiating table when Netanyahu's genocidal government in Israel decided to murder them with bombing attacks. Since then, missile barrages have gone back and forth between these two heavily armed states.Netanyahu's goals are obvious; he faces many corruption cases in Israel, and his unstable and extremist government needs an eternal war to cling to power. Genocide in Gaza or an all-out war with Iran both serve that purpose. The US President's decision to order a fierce bombing campaign on nuclear facilities in Iran is completely illegal within the United States, violates international treaties and international law, and is an escalation that threatens world peace. It would not be the first time that US imperialism has caused such a threat; the examples are countless, but the current circumstances are disturbingly reminiscent of the catastrophe that was the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Lies about weapons of mass destruction, just like now, were the justification. The consequences were a humanitarian crisis that still sees no end, deaths on a scale that sends shivers down one's spine, and a collection of war crimes that are a black stain on human history.Iceland was then among the "coalition of the willing" in the name of Davíð Oddsson's government. The justifications of Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, Minister for Foreign Affairs and leader of Viðreisn, formerly vice-chairman of the Independence Party, are disturbingly reminiscent of that previous disgrace. Kristrún Frostadóttir's government seems to intend to follow suit. Concerns about the situation are expressed, but at the same time, the Iranian government is somehow a threat to the Nordic countries. European authorities say the situation is such that the Iranian government must return to the negotiating table, but they gloss over what happened just over a week ago when Iranian representatives certainly did so.The Socialist Party of Iceland:

  • Condemns illegal attacks and declarations of war by the State of Israel and the United States against Iran.
  • Condemns the subservience of Icelandic authorities, especially the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, to US imperialism.
  • Demands that Kristrún Frostadóttir's government also condemn these illegal actions by the State of Israel and the United States.
  • Demands that Kristrún Frostadóttir's government use its voice on the international stage to demand an immediate ceasefire and peace talks.

If nothing is done and the Icelandic government again bows to the whip of the United States, then the disgrace is ours too. Do we want another Iraq War?
