Resolution
August 11, 2025Resolution on the 80th anniversary of the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
The Socialist Party of Iceland commemorates the victims of the nuclear bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, where hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians were murdered in a horrific attempt to demonstrate military power over the world. These attacks, which many military strategists and historians have now recognized as unnecessary given the state of the war, marked the beginning of the era we still live in today: the nuclear age. A period where the fate of life on Earth is at stake when it comes to direct military conflicts between superpowers. We still face the same empire, the same threats. The United States, which attacked Japan with nuclear weapons 80 years ago, has for decades maintained an imperialist policy based on military force, sanctions, coups, and economic oppression. Those who reject subservience, those who demand independence, peace, and welfare are subjected to violence. The United States regularly imposes economic sanctions against states that tend to reject complicity in genocide and occupation. Those nations that choose to support international law and human rights, especially when it is directed against US allies like Israel, are held accountable, not through dialogue, but through threats, tariffs, and exclusion. Are these democratic relations among nations? No. This is violence and oppression, imperialism in action: Punishment for daring to approach the rejection of complicity.
It is both a moral duty and in Iceland's interest to stand against this violence.
A world that breaks down into increasingly harsh conflicts, military buildup, disrespect for international law, and sanctions against peace-loving states is not only undemocratic, it is extremely dangerous.Such a development leads to ever-increasing escalation, where nuclear weapons are truly in play. In such a world, Iceland will not stand outside the consequences.Food security, trade, democracy, and welfare - all can be lost if instability and destruction are allowed to spread.
Therefore, we, the Socialist Party of Iceland, demand that the Icelandic government:
- Publicly commemorate the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and condemn the use and existence of nuclear weapons.
- Support South Africa's lawsuit against Israel and recognize Israel's genocide against Palestine.
- Sever all economic ties with Israel and ban trade with companies that profit from occupation and apartheid.
- Advocate for international trade sanctions against the settler-colonial state of Israel and strengthen trade and relations with the Palestinian people.
- Reconsider Iceland's membership in NATO and reject the presence of the US military in Iceland.
- Advocate much more strongly for disarmament agreements on the international stage.
- Increase communication and cooperation with states that uphold a multipolar world based on respect, cooperation, and international law.
We have stood against superpowers before. We have defended our sovereignty before. We can do it again. It's not just possible, it's necessary.Iceland should not submit to the power of empires. Iceland should stand for peace, for justice, for life itself.Socialist Party of Iceland
