Why should we vote for the Socialist Party?

Over 17.5 thousand foreigners are registered in Reykjavík, which is almost 14% of all residents of the capital, and the majority of them are Poles. Those who have lived in Iceland for at least 5 years have the right to vote. We should exercise this right to have a real impact on city policy. We are numerous enough to visibly contribute to election results. Realizing this, many parties also address their campaigns to immigrants. The Socialist Party is a party of people. People who have so far been excluded from public discussion, meaning generally working-class people, low-income earners, renters, pensioners, and also immigrants. Migrants have so far been only the subject of discussion, but not an equal partner. The Socialist Party wants to be the party of immigrants. We do not want migrants to be pushed into a lower class of society. Most immigrants in Iceland are concentrated in low-wage sectors. We perform basic jobs for salaries that often do not cover basic needs. Increasingly, migrants' rights are violated. The number of people employed under unfavorable conditions, subcontracted by employment agencies, or employed as posted workers is also increasing. According toASI report(Federation of Icelandic Trade Unions) such forms of employment generate the greatest risk of violating labor rights, and at the same time are the least protected by Icelandic law. Year after year, the number of serious violations increases, many of them described on the icelandnews.pl portal. Such asthe case of the Polish subcontracting company G&M, which did not pay its employees their salaries for three months. Orthe case of CityCarRenal, which forced Poles into illegal work.Another example isserious irregularities in the cleaning company Hreint ehf.I myself remember cleaning at the National Museum, and many of my Icelandic female colleagues admitted that they would never agree to the conditions offered by cleaning companies. That's why the Socialist Party wants to end subcontracting in the city. Directly employed workers have better working conditions, more rights, and a better protected position. We also want to raise the minimum wage in the city.In recent years, we have observed howIceland is slowly moving away from the Scandinavian welfare state model. The Socialist Party believes that everyone should have a secured minimum that allows for a dignified life. We want free healthcare, education, and social care for all, regardless of income or origin. In the last year alonerental prices increased by 50-70%. In our opinion, the city should control the housing market more, for example, by setting maximum rental rates. More social housing is also needed for people in the worst financial situation. We also want the city to be directly involved in building new housing and to establish cooperatives that will not be profit-oriented, which will exclude intermediaries who inflate the final price of housing. On the list of the Socialist Party, there are no politicians, but ordinary residents who are fed up with others deciding on matters that concern us. Our demands stem from real needs. Now is our time, our chance to change something. Therefore, vote on May 26.
