April 7, 2026Socialist Party's Candidate List in Reykjavík
Let's build a city that works for everyone – vote J on May 16th
The Socialist Party of Iceland presents a diverse list of candidates for the Reykjavík City Council. It includes people working on the front lines of the city's systems, individuals in low-wage jobs and university graduates, a strong representation of energetic young people and students, experienced seniors and workers, artists and disabled individuals, renters and borrowers. All Socialists are passionate about a more just city and present detailed election priorities that prioritize the fundamental pillars of society.
Let's build a city for people, not investors
Let's establish the Reykjavík Housing Association and build direct, affordable, quality, non-profit housing. Bjarg has shown us what works with approximately 40% lower average rent. The Reykjavík Housing Association will rent out non-profit housing for all city residents, sell units at cost price, prioritizing first-time buyers and low-income individuals, and provide apartments directly to Félagsbústaðir for social housing. Let's end land speculation and land policies that have driven up housing prices. We will allocate all city plots to non-profit and social development, thereby significantly reducing construction costs.
Public Transport in Public Hands
Public transport should be owned and operated by city residents. Let's reverse the trend of outsourcing and privatization. We will lower ticket prices and better connect routes to neighborhoods and service centers. Borgarlínan is a necessary development project but has been stuck in committees and expensive consulting services. We say no to parking apps where private entities profit from city parking spaces. We will ensure an adequate number of parking spaces for new developments. Outsourcing of street cleaning and snow removal must stop, and we demand a fair distribution of the kilometer charge between the state and the city. We will seek agreement on Sundabraut without tolls.
Schools as a True Equalizer
Let's increase the number of speech therapists, psychologists, developmental therapists, and behavioral scientists and ensure their permanent presence in schools. We will increase staff positions in preschools, extend preparation time, and ensure decent and fair wages for everyone. We will significantly strengthen Icelandic language teaching for children with foreign backgrounds and launch a reading campaign, ensure equal opportunities for sports and leisure activities, and cook healthier and fresher school meals within all schools.
Let's Lower Grocery Prices
Let's build City Stores in Breiðholt, Vesturbær, and Skeifan; non-profit grocery stores operated by the city to create a much-needed anchor for this oligopolistic market. Enough of the greed inflation from grocery giants, let's end the cost of living crisis. All operating revenues will go towards a more diverse product selection and lower prices.
Let's Insource and Stop Wasting Taxpayers' Money
Let's manage public tax money better – Let's stop outsourcing projects. It is both more expensive in the long run and results in poorer service. It has long been clear that capital income should be taxed equally with earned income and contribute to municipal taxes, and the City of Reykjavík should pressure Alþingi for this obvious justice. We will lower salaries and additional payments to elected representatives and curb high-salary policies among managers while addressing low-wage policies in frontline basic service jobs.
Let's Eradicate Homelessness and Increase Welfare
Let's follow the Finnish model and build small homes to eradicate homelessness. We will make emergency shelters more humane and improve facilities there in the meantime. We will ensure better oversight and professional services in transitional homes and clearer procedures in child protection. Let's reverse cuts to community centers and invest in our young people. We will increase access to swimming pools with lower fees. We will build diverse options for seniors and people with disabilities with the Reykjavík Housing Association, including more affordable micro-apartments, service centers, and nursing homes.
