Report by the city councilor of the Socialist Party of Iceland with a discussion on human trafficking

Reykjavík City CouncilJanuary 19, 2021A representative of the Socialist Party of Iceland proposes that a discussion take place in the city council on human trafficking. What measures does the City of Reykjavík have to combat the misery that such a thing is? How can the city, as the capital of the country and the largest municipality, work to ensure that individuals who are victims of human trafficking and have requested international protection are not at risk of being deported?Even though the City of Reykjavík does not handle the affairs of the Directorate of Immigration, it canurge the government to show increased humanity when it comes to granting individualsinternational protection in this country. Bjarkarhlíð has been entrusted with overseeingan implementation team for human trafficking cases (framkvæmdarteymi um mansalsmál). In this context, discussions or a proposal can be put forward for the city to approach the state and offer to receive people where there is a well-founded suspicion of human trafficking, and provide them with housing and sustenance if needed.
