February 13, 2019Lunchtime Protest No. 1: Return the Money
The first lunchtime protest will be held at the Social Insurance Administration building at 12:10 PM on Friday, February 15.
The Social Insurance Administration (Tryggingastofnun ríkisins) cut disability benefits for disabled individuals due to residency outside Iceland for more than ten years, despite warnings that it was illegal. The Althing Ombudsman (Umboðsmaður Alþingis) supported the complaints of the disabled, and finally, the Ministry of Welfare ruled that the reduction was illegal and that the Social Insurance Administration should pay the individuals full benefits.
But nothing has happened. Despite the fact that the people who suffered the reduction are among the poorest in the country and can least afford to lend money to the state treasury, none of the disabled individuals have received what was taken from them, not a single króna.
