September 19, 2017What should be done in elections?
Today there was a membership meeting of the Socialist Party of Iceland (Sósíalistaflokkur Íslands) about newly announced elections. The Party has established policy groups that are well underway with their first policy drafts. Work has also begun in socialist neighborhood groups, so-called cells, to cultivate connections among party members. The growth of the Party and its work aim to give party members themselves as much power as possible. However, the formation of the Party is not complete, and with the groundwork that is currently in place, considerable manual steering would be needed to establish a candidacy in time for parliamentary elections.
Sixty people attended and discussed the matters with warmth and vigor. The possibilities in the current situation were discussed, and a large portion of the attendees stepped up to the podium to express their thoughts. It was decided to consider and investigate the available options and conclude the meeting on Saturday at five o'clock.
It was also decided, in light of the timing of the elections, to move the Socialist Congress (Sósíalistaþing) to November 18th, so that it is not too close to election day.
