List of the Socialists in the South Constituency

“We stand at a crossroads. The unjust society that the extreme capitalism of neoliberalism has imposed on the public is on the verge of collapse. Yet the capitalist parties continue their policy of privatizing public assets and public services and intend to continue doing so against the will of the majority of the public. We can stop this,” says Guðmundur Auðunsson, who holds the first position on the list of the Socialist Party of Iceland (Sósíalistaflokkurinn) in the South Constituency.

The list is compiled by a randomly selected group of party members who have worked hard to reflect as clearly as possible the will of the party's grassroots, and we believe this yields much better results than traditional methods of compiling a list, which often give a distorted picture.

“I find it completely unacceptable and, in fact, an utter delusion that poverty exists in this country,” says Birna Eik Benediktsdóttir, who is in second place on the list. “Here, 10-15% of children live in poverty. It is not a law of nature that this is the case, but rather a political decision by the elite that some, including children, should live in poverty. We intend to change this.”

Ástþór Jón Ragnheiðarson, who is in third place, has a clear vision of the problems facing Icelandic society: “The problem with the community's infrastructure is not that we cannot build and operate it. The problem is that those in power starve the infrastructure to death and then trumpet the virtues of privatization. The Socialist Party is the only antidote to the immoral marketization of societal infrastructure.”

The Socialist Party presents, alongside the list, an offer to voters in the South Constituency:Let's build up work, housing, services, and transportation throughout the entire constituency. Here you can read the offer:Offer to voters in the South Constituency

In first place is Guðmundur Auðunssoneconomist. He has served on the Executive Board (Framkvæmdastjórn) of the Socialist Party for the past two years and assisted his colleagues in building up the party's grassroots. Guðmundur completed postgraduate studies in international economics and international political science in the United States but has mostly lived in London where he started his family. Guðmundur has now returned home, full of enthusiasm and socialist ideals.

In second place is Birna Eik Benediktsdóttir, a high school teacher and mother of six. She hails from the southern lowlands and the west. Birna has worked within the party since its inception in various ways and now sits on its Executive Board. Birna has been a socialist from an early age, raised in a very socially conscious home where it was considered natural to always look at the whole rather than special interests. Birna moved to Denmark at the age of 18 but returned home to Iceland with her children five years ago and now lives in Selfoss. She has been an active advocate against all forms of violence and discrimination, and her main concern is the status of children in a capitalist society.

In third place is Ástþór Jón Ragnheiðarsona coach and vice-chairman of ASÍ-UNG. Ástþór hails from Mýrdalur but resides in Hella, is a trained coach and has worked in athletics coaching for the past few years. He has previously worked as a machine operator, in a community center, in primary and preschools, and as a leisure and cultural representative in Mýrdalshreppur. Ástþór has held various positions of trust within the sports movement and the labor movement; today he is chairman of the UMFÍ Youth Council and vice-chairman of ASÍ-UNG, as well as holding a seat on ASÍ's Economic and Tax Committee. Ástþór has previously been involved in politics; from 2018-2020 he was a substitute member of the Mýrdalshreppur municipal council and at that time became the youngest municipal council member of Mýrdalshreppur ever, at 19 years old.

In fourth place is Arna Þórdís Árnadóttira project manager with an MA in international relations and a mother of two. Arna has been active in the Socialist Party since early 2019 and has, among other things, served on the party's Executive Board and is now chair of the Socialist Feminists. Arna grew up in Höfn í Hornafirði but now lives in Þorlákshöfn. Arna temporarily moved to Norway but decided to move back home three years ago and is now taking part in the struggle for Iceland.

In fifth place is Unnur Rán Reynisdóttira hairdresser, hairdressing teacher, and mother of four in Reykjanesbær, but she grew up in Flúðir. Unnur Rán has been a member of the Socialist Party since 2019, participated in the work of policy groups, and served on the Executive Board. She has worked as a hairdresser since the age of 21, completed studies for teaching qualifications for master craftsmen, and has since worked as a hairdressing teacher at Tækniskólinn. Unnur Rán has been active within the labor movement, among other things, serving on the board of the Hairdressers' Union (Félag hársnyrtisveina) and ASÍ-UNG, and working vigorously for labor and environmental protection in that arena and within her industry.

In sixth place is Þórbergur Torfasonan active tourism farmer and more. Þórbergur was born and raised in Hali in Suðursveit. That's where Icelandic was spoken, my goodness. He is a father of eight children, a grandfather of 15-20 children depending on how they are counted, and a great-grandfather of three. Þórbergur went to sea at 16 years old and worked as a fisherman until the turn of the century. He completed his studies at the navigation school in Vestmannaeyjar and is an aquaculture scientist from Hólaskóli. Þórbergur worked in fisheries inspection for Fiskistofa and as a researcher at Hafrannsóknarstofnun. Þórbergur is a socialist to his fingertips, and his main political interests are coastal fishing, the quota system, Vatnajökull National Park, and tourism in harmony with agriculture.

In seventh place is Einar Már Atlason, a salesman and entrepreneur. Einar grew up in Akranes but spent a lot of time in Hella during his upbringing. He lives in Reykjanesbær today with his wife and two children. Einar has, among other things, worked in various retail and service jobs and recently in aviation-related activities at Keflavík Airport. Einar has been involved with various associations over the years. He participated in the establishment of the first non-profit housing association in Suðurnes in 2017 and founded the organization Opponents of Heavy Industry in Helguvík (Andstæðingar stóriðju í Helguvík), which had strong support among the residents of Reykjanesbær. He has also lent his strength to the labor movement. This struggle has now led Einar to offer his services within the Socialist Party.
