June 12, 2020Applause does not raise wages!
Still we are in the position thatwomen's professionfights for fair wages. One may ask what fair wages entail. Should it be based on education? Workload? Responsibility? Shortage of people in a specific profession? Nurses certainly fulfill all these criteria without their counterparts respecting them. One may even ask if the shortage of working nurses will not be rectified with reasonable wage agreements. We have certainly felt in recent months how important the nursing profession is to our society. Nurses in health centers and hospitals are declared heroes; they are applauded and even candles are lit for them. However, it is not possible to pay them wages in accordance with that. No, just like flight attendants, the profession must be made up of presumptuous bullies, women, who do not understand how things are, where the power lies. There is no money to pay more, not for nurses. You are just our heroes, not CEOs!If you choose a job like nursing, you should realize that you will never get decent wages, you will never get fair wages. You chose this! People who choose to go into nursing do so out of idealism, just like those who choose to study to be a teacher or a nursing assistant. People want to have a positive impact in their community. But that they get paid accordingly is considered absolute nonsense. It is a minimum that nurses, as well as other professions, can go to their work with pride, hold their heads high, and have food on their table at home. Then pure day work should be enough for decent wages. Working evenings, nights, and/or weekends should be an option that is paid extra, not a necessity. There is a risk that staff who are forced to do so will quickly burn out. Now, the number of places in nursing at both HA and HÍ is to be increased, which is good, but it is contradictory that in the midst of the profession's wage struggle, a large sum of money is to be invested in educating more nurses, but nothing can be done to keep those who are already present happy in their jobs?Nurses have had enough, and we as a society should have had enough long ago. Repeatedly we see the same struggle ignored by those in power with the same pathetic excuses. We demand that nurses be paid decent and fair wages for all the responsibility that rests upon them. We, the undersigned, are socialist feminists and declare full support for the nurses' struggle. There is money for nurses!Alda Lóa LeifsdóttirAndri SigurðssonArna Þórdís ÁrnadóttirArndís JónasdóttirÁsa KolbrúnÁsa Lind FinnbogadóttirBára Jóhannesdóttir GuðrúnardóttirBogi ReynissonCandice Michelle GoddardDavíð HusbyElísabet EinarsdóttirElísabet Ýr AtladóttirElva Dögg BlumensteinErna HlínHalldóra Jóhanna HafsteinsdóttirÂûJóna Guðbjörg TorfadóttirKatrín BaldursdóttirLaufey ÓlafsdóttirMargrét Rósa SigurðardóttirMaría PétursdóttirRagna Björg BjörnsdóttirSigurlaug Lára IngimundardóttirStefnir BenediktssonUnnur Rán ReynisdóttirValkyrja Helga Stefáns GuðrúnardóttirYnda Eldborg.
