Ólafur Jónsson aka Óli ufsi running for the Socialist Party

Ólafur Jónsson, a former ship captain, has taken a place on the Socialist Party's list in the South Reykjavík constituency, as Jón Kristinn Cortez had to withdraw from the election campaign due to unforeseen circumstances. Ólafur takes his place, the fourth place on the party's list in South Reykjavík.

“I believe that the elections this autumn will be the most important elections in the history of the republic,” says Ólafur. “If we do not manage to gain parliamentary strength that wants to make decisive changes to the quota system, and preferably abolish it, it will be even less likely that we will succeed in defeating this unjust system. A large majority of people want this system gone. If people vote according to this conviction, then we will succeed in correcting these injustices. We need to vote on the quota.”

Katrín Baldursdóttir, who leads the list in South Reykjavík, welcomes Ólafur's arrival on the list. “Ólafur will further strengthen the party's advocacy in quota matters, which, as he points out, will be one of the major election issues. Furthermore, Ólafur is a particularly lively and enjoyable man. It will be fun to work with him.”

Ólafur Jónsson, often called Óli ufsi, is a senior citizen and a former ship captain for many years. Ólafur has worked in the Icelandic fishing industry for over fifty years, mostly as a ship captain. He worked for eight years as a technical salesman of fishing gear abroad, particularly in North and South America. In this role, Ólafur traveled to most of the world's major fishing nations and met captains and vessel owners in many countries. Ólafur was the managing director of Hampidjan USA for three years. Ólafur has been an active opponent of the quota system since its inception. He wants to ensure that all citizens of society have equal opportunities in upbringing, education, and working life. Ólafur believes that the injustice, inefficiency, and corruption surrounding fishing must call for the abolition of the quota system as soon as possible. To achieve that goal, Ólafur works within the Socialist Party.
