June 19, 2018Sanna doesn't want summer vacation
Sanna Magdalena Mörtudóttir, a Socialist Party of Iceland city councilor, submitted a statement when it was proposed that the city council take a summer vacation after today's meeting and not reconvene until early September.
The statement says: "Elected city councilors were elected this spring to address various important issues concerning the welfare of the city's residents, which were discussed during the election campaign. The housing crisis weighs heavily, many live with insecurity in the rental market or lack housing solutions, and this erodes the living standards of the general public. We were elected here to address these issues and work for the people who elected us, and therefore it is unacceptable for summer vacation to begin immediately after the first city council meeting, before we have the opportunity to discuss the issues that voters directed at us during the election campaign.
It is important to set a policy on issues that cannot wait, and therefore it is indefensible for city council meetings to be canceled for the remainder of July and August. If this proposal is approved, the city council will be taking a summer vacation from tomorrow, June 20th, until early September. Which is unacceptable, especially to take paid leave after one meeting; I do not find that acceptable. Where is it customary to get a long paid vacation after one shift?"
