June 19, 2018Sanna does not want a summer holiday
Sanna Magdalena Mörtudóttir, socialist city councilor, submitted a statement when it was proposed that the city council (borgarstjórn) take a summer holiday after today's meeting and would not convene until early September.
The statement reads: „Elected city councilors were elected this spring to address various important issues concerning the welfare of the city's residents and discussed during the election campaign. The housing crisis is a major issue there, many live with insecurity in the rental market or lack housing solutions, and such erodes the living standards of the general public. We were elected here to address these matters and work for the people who elected us, and therefore it is unacceptable that summer leave begins immediately after the first meeting of the city council, before we have the opportunity to discuss the issues that voters directed to us during the election campaign.
It is important to set a policy on issues that cannot wait, and therefore it is indefensible that city council meetings are canceled for the remainder of July and August. If this proposal is approved, the city council will be taking a summer holiday from tomorrow, June 20th, until early September. Which is unacceptable, especially to take paid leave after one meeting, I do not find that acceptable. Where is it customary to get a long paid holiday after one shift?“
