August 26, 2023The Socialist Party of Iceland (Sósíalistaflokkurinn) objects to increasing militarization in Europe and warns against its consequences for living standards on the continent.
The Socialist Party warns against increased militarization of Europe and Iceland in particular. The Party rejects all ideas of increased contributions from the state treasury to military affairs. Increasing military spending in fact undermines security in Europe. Militarization increases the likelihood of armed conflicts but also undermines security within societies. Funds that would otherwise be used to strengthen welfare and infrastructure are spent on purchasing weapons and instruments of death.Foreign PolicyThe Socialist Party's foreign policy is based on peace and emphasizes that Iceland shall always be demilitarized and unarmed. It states:“Instead of being a powerless small nation within a military alliance, we want the nation to strengthen its relationship and cooperation with neighboring nations and other small nations and establish a peace alliance. Such an alliance would be an alternative to the country's current presence in NATO. At the time, entry into NATO was not put to the nation. That should be done as soon as possible. In this way, we can better work for human rights and a democratic constitutional order within the world against the power of capital and the oppression of larger states against smaller ones. Furthermore, Iceland shall always be demilitarized and unarmed. We condemn all violence and in no way support armed conflicts or the oppression of one state against another.”It is the demand of the Socialist Party that Icelandic authorities always aim for peace and never support armed conflicts. There are enough militarized states for such actions. It is not fitting for a demilitarized and unarmed nation to advocate for armed conflicts and militarization. Iceland's voice in the international arena should be used to advocate for peace, ceasefires, cessation of conflicts, and disarmament. Iceland's voice should be used to advocate for human dignity and respect for human lives.
