The Socialist Party urges the government to face the fact that it has lost the trust of the nation

In a democratic society, it is important that authorities govern in line with the will of the people, the public. The current government goes against the will of a large majority of the public in almost all important matters. It does not build housing when the public demands it. It sells state assets in banks when the public does not want it. The government strengthens the quota system even though the public is opposed to the quota system. The public wants to greatly increase contributions to healthcare, but the government does not address it. The public wants a fair tax system where the wealthier contribute proportionally more to public consumption, but the government defends the neoliberal tax system, where the tax burden was eased for the rich but increased for the public and especially the poorest. This is the situation in all major policy areas. Instead of following the will of a large majority of the public, the government pursues the interests of the few, the rich and the powerful. While the public experienced a threat during the pandemic, the majority of them trusted that the government would protect them from the danger. When the danger passed, it became clear what consequences it has for a government to go against the public will in almost all matters. Trust in the government collapsed. The government will not regain it. The government remains in power today against the will of a large majority of the public.Under such circumstances, a government should step down and give the public the opportunity to elect new authorities. That is how democracy works. A government that does not enjoy trust causes great harm. The Socialist Party demands that parliamentary elections be called as soon as possible.Drafted and approved at a joint meeting of the Executive Board (Framkvæmdastjórn) and the Policy Board (Málefnastjórn) of the Socialist Party.
