The Socialist Party demands that the government face the bankruptcy of its housing policy and calls for a major effort in building social housing.

The bankruptcy of the government's housing policy is evident. Not more apartments are being built as the Minister of Infrastructure promises, but fewer. Rent prices are rising and usurious rent is eroding the purchasing power of low-income individuals. Young people cannot afford to buy housing and are trapped in the poverty trap of the rental market. Fewer have access to affordable and secure housing. More people live with gnawing insecurity and deteriorating living conditions. When the policy fails, a new policy must be formulated, not constantly offering the same solutions that have been repeatedly proven not to work. And not constantly showcasing the same slideshows that have repeatedly been shown to have no connection to reality. The government needs to wake up and face the reality that the nation's inhabitants live with. Two years ago, the Socialist Party presenteda new approach to housing: The Great Housing Revolution: 30 thousand apartments in ten years. It proposed a major effort in building a social housing system protected from the toxic effects of the market: land speculation, oligopoly of construction contractors, usurious rent by landlords, and usurious interest rates by banks. The problem with the Icelandic housing market is how small a part of it is socially developed. The only way to improve the situation is to expand the social component with a major effort in the coming years.Regarding this, the Socialist Party's address states:"The Great Housing Revolution will take control of the housing system from speculators, contractors, large investors, banks, and financial companies, and transfer power to the public. Apartments will be built according to the needs, hopes, and expectations of the public, not profit-driven companies. Speculators can build their apartments, but they will be outside the public system and receive no support from the state treasury. The supply of affordable apartments within the Great Housing Revolution will curb housing price increases in the wild market, as price increases in recent years have been driven by an organized shortage of housing.A reduction in housing costs will lead to a general improvement in living standards. The public, especially those currently in the wild rental market; young people, immigrants, and low-income individuals; will have more disposable income and will therefore stimulate the economy with funds that previously flowed into the coffers of the few and wealthy. People's anxiety about their livelihood will decrease, fewer will need to work two or three jobs to make ends meet, labor exploitation will diminish, people will have more time with their children, relatives, and friends, and more time to engage in social life and active participation in society."The housing policy of the Socialist Party is in complete opposition to the housing policy of the current government and many previous governments. The party's policy is shaped by the needs of the public and aims to ensure good, affordable, and secure housing for all residents. The government's housing policy aims to ensure the maximum profit for land speculators, contractors, banks, and landlords from families' need for a roof over their heads, to turn people's basic need into a source of profit for the wealthy.Drafted and approved at a joint meeting of the Executive Board (Framkvæmdastjórn) and the Policy Board (Málefnastjórn) of the Socialist Party.
