The Socialist Party supports the struggle of coastal fishers against large fishing companies

The Socialist Party demands that coastal fishing be immediately resumed. It was an absurd decision by the Minister of Food to yield to the demand of large fishing companies and not increase the quotas for the coastal fishing fleet. Coastal fishing is the most environmentally friendly fishing method; it promotes job creation in fishing communities that the quota system has treated poorly, and it creates employment opportunities for fishermen outside the oppressive subjugation of large fishing companies. Coastal fishing is also the part of fishing that best highlights the importance of separating fishing and processing with the sale of catches in the fish market, which the Socialist Party considers a prerequisite for the development of a healthy fishing industry.Inproposalsthe Socialist Party's proposals on the reclamation of resources state:"The quota system, which was originally established to protect fish stocks, has evolved into a monstrosity that has effectively privatized public fishing grounds. The system has dismantled communities and accumulated wealth for a few, so vast that it threatens democracy and public freedom. The Socialist Party has the policy of abolishing this system and building a more just framework for fishing and processing. A new framework must rebuild what the quota system destroyed and break up the wealth circles that the quota system created."In the party's proposals, it also states:"Handline fishing will be made free for five fishing days a week of one's own choosing from March to October. It is based on three lines where there is one person on board, but four where there are two. These fisheries must comply with the weather warnings from the Icelandic Meteorological Office (Veðurstofan)."Coastal fishing is only a small part of the fishing industry today. Coastal fishers stand weak against the arrogance and aggression of large fishing companies. The Socialist Party supports the struggle of coastal fishers and condemns how authorities always choose to defend the interests of large fishing companies, which are not the interests of the public.
