May 17, 2018Socialists condemn the mayor's excessive salary
It is reprehensible how the mayor of Kópavogur has allocated his salary to himself during the past term. His salary has increased by 612 thousand per month. He probably views this salary increase as a reward for a job well done on behalf of the town's residents. However, it is far from the truth that the mayor has performed so well. This can be seen, for example, in the deteriorating services for the elderly, in preschools and primary schools, and not least in the long waiting list for social housing. Wherever one looks in the welfare services in Kópavogur, resources are scarce and funding is cut to the bone. Many people working for Kópavogur municipality find it difficult to make ends meet, as they are offered starvation wages for a full day's work. The lowest paid workers spend a full two months earning the salary increase that the mayor allocates to himself each month, and a full eight months earning one month's salary of the mayor.
This kind of conduct is unacceptable: to raise one's own salary while offering low-wage workers employed by the municipality to live at poverty levels. Socialist candidates in Kópavogur condemn these practices and demand that the mayor's salary increase be immediately reversed.

Here you can see how little Kópavogur municipality has done during the term to address the housing crisis. The bars show the increase in social housing units in Kópavogur 2003-2017. The majority of Sjálfstæðisflokkur and Björt framtíð took over in 2014.
