June 5, 2018Socialists will support important issues
The Socialist Party will support the following issues in the city council, the issues that the party prioritized in the election campaign, regardless of which parties agree on a majority coalition:
That tenants and people on waiting lists for social housing be appointed to the board of Félagsbústaðir, that grown-up foster children be appointed to the Child Protection Committee (barnaverndarnefnd), that bus passengers be appointed to the board of Strætó bs, and that users of Reykjavík City's services be directly put in charge of shaping the services and the development of the city. A good society can only be built on the demands and expectations of the people who experience injustice and the shortcomings of current systems.
That Reykjavík City itself establish a housing association and build affordable and safe housing for people until the burdens of the housing crisis are lifted from those least able to bear them; low-wage earners, poor pensioners, disabled people, young people, immigrants, and other powerless people.
That minimum wages at Reykjavík City's institutions and companies be immediately raised to 400 thousand krónur per month and that Reykjavík City's institutions and companies be prohibited from purchasing goods and services from companies that pay their lowest-paid employees lower wages.
That all outsourcing by Reykjavík City and its institutions and companies in which it holds a share be stopped. All staff shall be employed by the institutions and companies where they perform their work, with all the rights and terms that come with permanent employment.
That systematic work be done against class division in primary schools, all student payments for learning materials, food, or leisure activities abolished, and school services focused on those children who receive the least support at home.
That public transport in the city be developed based on the demands of those who travel by bus and that a large Council of Bus Passengers (ráð strætófarþega) be appointed to shape the future policy for buses and public transport in the city and neighboring areas.
That all collaboration with land speculators, contractors, and private rental companies regarding urban planning issues be stopped and that it be the city's policy to drive profit-driven companies away from speculating with residential housing.
