Policy of the Socialist Party of Iceland on resource and environmental issues

The policy of the Socialist Party of Iceland is:

  • that all marine resources caught within Icelandic territorial waters belong to the Icelandic nation, and as with other resources, this ownership right shall never be transferred to private entities, any more than the ownership right of other resources.
  • that all quotas shall be revoked and returned to the state and allocated with a view to ensuring that intermediaries in trade do not profit excessively at the expense of the resource owners or those working in the fishing industry. But also that settlements can be maintained as evenly as possible in rural areas.
  • that water, in whatever form it is found, shall be defined as a natural resource and as such it is the common property of the nation and non-transferable. The right of utilization shall never be transferred, whether to a private company or a municipality, except for short periods at a time.
  • that the Icelandic state shall protect groundwater, both hot and cold, and decisions regarding its utilization shall always be made democratically and with direct public involvement.
  • that everything that can be reused shall be reused and everything that can be recycled shall be recycled, including water.
  • that the use of single-use plastic packaging in Iceland shall cease and this shall be implemented in steps.
  • that waste shall be utilized as fertilizer and as recycled water.
  • that 80-90% of plastic shall be reusable. Those who profit from its production and use shall be responsible for its recycling.
  • that companies and other institutions shall be required to offer for use cosmetically flawed or expired food products, if they are fit for consumption. A cost shall be associated with discarding such food products into unsorted waste.

Further readingA resource is a natural phenomenon that yields value of some kind and therefore belongs to the nation as a whole. Since it is self-generated, a resource can never belong to a private entity or a municipality and shall always be owned by the nation and utilized for the benefit of the nation. The role of authorities shall be to protect human rights against private property rights and maintain a balance between nature conservation and environmental utilization for the benefit of the nation. The interests of the nation as a whole shall always be prioritized in the utilization and disposition of natural resources.Environmental protection shall be a guiding principle in all land use.Landowners are obliged to maintain adequate facilities on their lands to prevent trespassing and protect land quality, and if they are unable to do so, landowners shall be obliged to sell the land to the state at appraisal value. These lands shall then not be permanently transferred again, but rather the right of utilization shall be temporarily allocated to parties interested in utilizing them.Inequality in societies is not natural despite being widespread. In an ecosystem, inequality is equivalent to predators multiplying too quickly and consuming their prey. Capitalist market practices and heavy industry contribute to ongoing environmental damage. Sustainability will therefore never become a reality in the unequal social order of capitalism. Capitalism is the enemy of nature, and by serving it, we ultimately contribute to the extinction of humanity. The Socialist Party emphasizes democracy and decentralization of power, and with this in mind, residents shall have the final say where conflicts between residential areas and businesses occur. The people in the neighborhood must gain power over their own neighborhood and never be made passive victims of pollution from businesses, whether it is air pollution, noise pollution, drunken disturbances, or anything else.Healthy soil is a resource and must be protected. Soil erosion must be combated.
