The founding meeting of the Socialist Party marks the first steps

At the founding meeting of the Socialist Party of Iceland, an Interim Board (Bráðabirgðastjórn) was elected to prepare for the Socialist Congress (Sósíalistaþing) in the autumn. The Interim Board operates according to the founding statutes of the Socialist Party of Iceland, which were adopted at the founding meeting, and in the spirit of the Policy published on the party's website in April 2017.

The main task of the Interim Board is to expand the Socialist Party of Iceland, develop internal operations, and strengthen public discussion about its policy. For this purpose, the Interim Board maintains a membership register, establishes group work around specific projects, organizes events and publications, handles the updating and management of the Socialist Party's electronic media, and takes initiative for other work as appropriate.

The Interim Board is responsible for the preparation and execution of the Socialist Congress, which will be held in the autumn months of 2017 and no later than November 1, 2017. The Socialist Congress serves as the national convention of the Socialist Party of Iceland and will be its highest authority. At the Socialist Congress, the Interim Board will relinquish its responsibility to the board.

The Interim Board does not assume a leading mandate for formal policy-making but shall establish and support groups of members who work on the development of a detailed policy. A detailed policy will be discussed and put forward for approval at the Socialist Congress.

The Interim Board divides tasks among itself and appoints positions of chairman, vice-chairman, spokesperson, treasurer, secretary, and board members as needed and appropriate, provided that it is always clear which board members handle meeting invitations, write minutes, and manage finances.

The Interim Board holds regular meetings, and these shall be open to members, provided they are announced in a timely manner. The Interim Board maintains minutes, and these shall be made public on the website as soon as possible. However, the Interim Board has the authority to restrict access to its meetings and keep minutes confidential in whole or in part if strong reasons arise, such as privacy considerations.

The following were elected to the Interim Board of the Socialist Party of Iceland: Ásta Dís Guðjónsdóttir, chairman of Sjálfsbjörg á Höfuðborgarsvæðinu and coordination manager for Pepp Ísland, an organization for people in poverty; Benjamín Julian, support worker; Gunnar Smári Egilsson, journalist; Laufey Ólafsdóttir, vice-chairman of EAPN (European Anti-Poverty Network) in Iceland, coordination manager for Pepp Ísland, and board member of Félag einstæðra foreldra; María Gunnlaugsdóttir, nurse and disabled person; Sanna Magdalena Mörtudóttir, master's student in anthropology at the University of Iceland; Sigurður H. Einarsson, mechanic; Sólveig Anna Jónsdóttir, preschool worker; and Viðar Þorsteinsson, part-time lecturer and founder of Róttæki sumarháskólinn.
