February 1, 2022Proposal by the Socialist Party of Iceland's city councilor to strengthen bus connections
Reykjavík City Council agrees to direct the board of Strætó bs. to improve bus connections between districts and within districts. This will be done in cooperation with passengers. It is important to improve connections for people who rely on the bus in their daily lives. To build public transport as a reliable option that more people want to use in the future, it is important that it be done based on the voices and needs of users. Connections refer to the routes that the buses take in the current Strætó route system, as well as the location and number of bus stops available on that route.
The 'borgarlína' (city line) is often referred to when discussing the improvements that need to take place in public transport. It will be a long time until that becomes a reality, and people who rely on the bus today need better solutions now. It is therefore important to strengthen and enhance the bus system based on user needs. By building public transport based on the voices of passengers, the likelihood increases that more people will choose that option, as it is a reliable alternative.
Living near a bus stop does not necessarily mean that it is a stop that will get people to their destination. Special attention needs to be paid to connections between districts and to ensuring that it is possible to travel within a district, e.g., to and from shopping centers. When new districts are created, it must be ensured that transport is available into and out of the district. The number of bus stops on each route also needs to be reviewed to ensure there are enough.
