Proposal by a city councilor of the Socialist Party of Iceland on a challenge to the state to implement a rent cap and rent freeze.
The City Council agrees to challenge the state to implement a rent cap and rent freeze. An overwhelming majority of the public wants a cap on rental prices to be introduced and also for a rent freeze to be introduced in this country. Tenants are often stuck between low incomes and exorbitant rent, and therefore it is proposed that the Reykjavík City Council challenge the state to implement a rent cap and rent freeze.
Explanation71% of respondents in a recent Maskína poll were very or somewhat in favor of a rent cap being imposed on rent in this country. A rent cap means that a maximum rent price is issued for housing based on size, quality, and location. 72% of respondents were very or somewhat in favor of a rent freeze being introduced. A rent freeze involves a benchmark for how much rent may increase over a certain period. Representatives of the socialists reiterate the importance of meeting the needs of tenants who are in a difficult situation. Rent has increased uncontrollably, and tenants are often stuck between low incomes and exorbitant rent.
