Socialist proposal that the salaries of city councilors and deputy city councilors do not increase

At a city council meeting today, the Socialist Party of Iceland (Sósíalistaflokkur Íslands) put forward a proposal that the basic salaries of city councilors and 1st deputy city councilors should not increase in line with the development of the wage index, as they have done.

The basic salaries are based on the development of the wage index from March 2013 and are updated every January and July. While the COVID-19 pandemic is ongoing and society is dealing with its economic consequences, it is important that the higher-paid members of the ruling classes show responsibility through action.

The first step in that direction is to ensure that the salaries of city councilors do not increase in the coming months. It is also important that if this decision is reviewed later, it does not lead to retroactive salary increases.
