Proposal by the Socialist Party of Iceland for the Department of Welfare to create space and a channel

Proposal by the Socialist Party of Iceland for the Department of Welfare to create space and a channel to facilitate those who use the department's services to convey their experienceswas discussed at a welfare council meeting earlier. It was agreed to refer the proposal to a steering group on policy-making in the development of community centers for adults, for further consideration. Reykjavík City has 17 community centers throughout the city that are open to residents of all ages and could be well suited for this activity.

The proposal is as follows:It is proposed that the Department of Welfare facilitate the establishment of interest groups for those who use the department's services by offering a place where the different groups can meet if they choose to do so. The Department of Welfare provides services and support to numerous individuals in various fields, and it is important to hear the voices of these individuals to see and hear how the services can be improved. The services of the Department of Welfare concern issues of senior citizens, disabled people, homeless individuals, and issues of children and adolescents. The Department of Welfare also handles family and social affairs, which include, for example, financial assistance and special housing support. The Department of Welfare also provides home care, is involved in social housing projects, and manages the operation of service centers.

Interest groups exist for various issues related to the Department of Welfare's services, but not all. Often, a lack of a meeting place can be an obstacle to establishing a facility to meet and discuss with those in similar situations to oneself. A meeting place often costs money that not everyone has, and therefore it is proposed that the Department of Welfare provide such a place and make information about the meeting place accessible. If interest groups request to convey information on how to improve the services, a platform for such expertise will be created in collaboration with the interest groups, the Department of Welfare, and the Welfare Council.
