Resolution
August 20, 2025Nominate Francesca Albanese for the Nobel Peace Prize
The Socialist Party of Iceland (Sósíalistaflokkur Íslands) urges the government and members of parliament (Alþingi) to nominate Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, for the Nobel Peace Prize.Francesca Albanese has courageously, honestly, and steadfastly been a voice for the Palestinian people on the international stage, while the genocide of the Palestinian people by the State of Israel continues unabated. Israel's land grab in Palestine continues, illegal settlements expand daily, and massacres of children, women, and the elderly are commonplace. When the world faces such crimes against humanity, it is the least we can do to honor those who have the courage to speak the truth and defend the rights of the victims. Francesca Albanese is one of the few international officials who has not been silenced, but has spoken frankly against land grabbing, occupation, and genocide. For this, she has become the target of constant attacks: economic sanctions, misrepresentations, and political persecution – particularly by the US government – as well as media attacks aimed at undermining her credibility. Despite this, she stands unwavering with justice. Many European Union states are not only complicit but are actively and fully supporting the ongoing genocide by arming and funding the settler-colonial state of Israel. Their complicity extends far beyond silence: they are themselves perpetrators in this historic crime against humanity. The current government of Iceland, like the last government, proves complicit and increases that complicity with each passing day that it does not fully and forcefully oppose the genocide and egregious violations of international law and human rights. Through inaction and subservience to the same states that uphold the genocide, it makes Iceland complicit in these crimes. Our history reminds us how important it is to stand with the truth and with those who dare to express it when it matters most. In 1934, the writer Þórbergur Þórðarson was convicted by the Supreme Court of Iceland for saying that Hitler was a sadist. Today, we see parallels when those who criticize Israel and Western complicity in genocide are persecuted.Francesca Albanese, however, has stood up fearlessly and expressed the truth, despite constant attacks and attempts to silence her. It is our duty to support such courage and to grant those who dare to speak the truth the honor and strength that the Nobel Peace Prize can embody. The Socialist Party of Iceland therefore calls on the government of Iceland and parliament to nominate Francesca Albanese for the Nobel Peace Prize for her invaluable work for peace, justice, and the human rights of the Palestinian people. A struggle that is not only for Palestine but for the fundamental values of humanity, for compassion, justice, and a world where the lives of all people are respected. There is a long way to go for the international community to truly reflect these values, but Francesca Albanese stands as a clear beacon in the darkness. The Socialist Party of Iceland
