Discussion by a city councilor of the Socialist Party of Iceland (Sósíalistaflokkur Íslands) on measures to address the situation of the homeless

The Socialists request a discussion in the city council on October 18th on solutions for the homeless in the city. The aim of the discussion is to achieve solutions for those who have no shelter, especially when emergency shelters are closed during the day. The aim of the discussion is that after the city council meeting, the discussion will have led to a solution that can be implemented immediately, to address the problem that the homeless have reported.

The Socialists have submitted a proposal that the overnight shelters in the city not be closed during the day. In this context, it is important to ensure that a day center is open in the city if emergency shelters cannot be kept open during the day. Various proposals have been put forward in the Welfare Council (velferðarráð) that have not been implemented, and it is urgent that they be implemented immediately, as the matters are based on great need. Winter has already begun to bite, and if action is not taken, the homeless are in great danger.
